In Catholic theology, angels are understood as spiritual beings created by God to serve as His messengers and servants. They are pure spirits, without physical bodies, who exist to glorify God and carry out His divine will. The Catholic Church teaches that angels are personal and immortal beings with intelligence and free will, but they are distinct from humans in that they are not bound by material limitations. 

Angels play various roles in Catholic belief, such as delivering messages (like Gabriel's annunciation to Mary), protecting individuals (as guardian angels), and waging spiritual battles (like Michael leading the heavenly army). The Church recognizes three main categories of angels: the Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones, each with specific functions, as part of the nine choirs of angels described by theologians. 

Catholics also believe that each person is assigned a guardian angel at birth, whose role is to guide, protect, and pray for the individual. Angels are honored but not worshipped; their veneration is directed toward God, whom they serve completely. Catholic tradition emphasizes that angels help believers on their path to salvation and are a part of the greater heavenly community.
